Q: DO I NEED TO ATTEND TRYOUTS?
A: If you are currently playing at the recreational level and are unsure about playing at the classic level, ask yourself the following questions:
Do I really enjoy playing soccer?
Am I a strong player at the recreational level and ready to focus on learning more skills and compete?
Do I want to play soccer in High School?
If you answered yes to the above questions you should be playing classic soccer; then yes attend tryouts. If no then tryouts are not for you and you will be rostered on a recreational team.
Q: WHAT IS COMPETITVE (CLASSIC) SOCCER?
A: Classic soccer is for those players that want more from their soccer experience. It is performance oriented soccer where the competition is taken seriously. Win/loss records are taken into account, although player development is still one of the goals of the competitive program. Learning to be the best you can be and work together towards the success of the team is often best learned in a competitive sports environment. Competitive soccer is an opportunity for dedicated soccer players to improve and develop their skills beyond the recreational levels while having fun.
Q: WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?
A: Classic soccer will require a higher level of time and commitment than recreational soccer. Practices begin in late June or early July. Teams may choose to play in summer tournaments in preparation for the OYSA Qualifying Tournament held the first weekend in August for fall league placement. Classic games are held on both Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Training sessions are held at least twice a week; the time and date is established by the coach. Players are expected to attend all team activities.
Q: HOW ARE THE TEAMS FORMED?
A: Teams are formed through try-outs. Teams consist of 14-16 players. Not all players who attend tryouts will be chosen. All players not chosen will still have the opportunity to play on a recreational team. The tryouts will consist of various skills activities, small sided games and some time in full size 11 v. 11
format. Players are evaluated on technical and tactical soccer skills, fitness and athleticism as well as workrate and attitude.
Q: IS COMPETITIVE SOCCER A YEAR ROUND COMMITMENT?
A: U-11 through U-14 teams play in fall and spring. High school age club teams may chose to play in the winter league, the regional SOCL Spring league and/ or in various tournaments.
For U-12 through U-14 players, we ask our players commit to make soccer their primary sport the Fall & Spring seasons. (Coaches may make exceptions regarding this depending on the pool of players and specific circumstances for individual players. ) For various reasons, there are typically spots on competitive teams that open for the Spring season or at other times, and supplemental tryouts are held at that time.
If players are unable to make the committments needed to be placed on a competitive team, they are strongly encouraged to
continue playing on a recreational team.
Q: HOW MUCH PRACTICE TIME IS REQUIRED?
A: Training sessions are set by the individual coaches. Most require 1 1/2 - 2 hours per training session, 2-3 times per week. Practice is what you do on your own; training is what you do with your team. If you expect to be a great player on a great team you must practice every chance you get. If all you do is practice at team training sessions then you will not develop enough to stay on the team. You should try to work with your ball every day by Juggling, Dribbling, Trapping, or practicing Fakes. Attendance is mandatory for all training sessions; missed sessions will affect playing time.
Q: HOW FAR DO WE HAVE TO TRAVEL?
A: Most competitive teams play in the Southern Oregon Classic League which involves day trips to Roseberg, Klamath Falls, possibly Redding or the coast and shorter trips to play in Medford or Grants Pass.
Statewide teams will travel to the Portland area. Depending on the results of the OYSA Qualifying tournament a team may travel to Eastern or Western Oregon as well as the Portland area.
Q: WHAT IS THE COST?
A: Registration fees vary depending on changing cost of league entry fees, referee fees and mileage, field use fees, etc.
Typically, annual fees from Ashland Soccer Club do not exceed $300. Players will need to pay for additional tournaments and other expenses the team chooses--such as
purchasing team bags, special team equipment, or warmups.
All travel costs (transportation and lodging) are the responsibility of player's families. Teams will sometimes do fundraisers to help raise funds to cover travel expenses or the cost of participating in tournaments.
